ADDIE SHEVLIN
ABOUT ADDIE SHEVLIN
Addie Shevlin
b. 1942
Addie Shevlin's abstract compositions reflect an intuitive engagement with her materials. She manipulates paint with brushes, brayers, fingers, and rags, letting her compositions emerge on the canvas in response to this highly physical process. She confesses to a love of calligraphy, and calligraphic marks often find their way onto her surfaces. Though Addie's palette is muted, layers of under-painted color infuse each stroke to create the impression of a profound but ambiguous space.
Addie was born into an artistic family in Illinois, and family vacations included plenty of time for museum tours and sketching. From 1961 to 1963, the young artist took classes at the celebrated Art Students League in New York, and she later sought instruction from Bay Area artists including Jay DeFeo, Charles Farr, and Ralph Borge. While pursuing her study of visual art, Addie also earned a bachelor's degree in education and a master's degree in English literature. Addie has shown in museums and galleries throughout California, and is currently based out of San Francisco.
